Sunlight activates the panels
Sunlight activates solar panels by providing energy that causes electrons in the solar cells to move, creating an electric current. This current is then captured and converted into usable electricity to power homes or businesses.

Cells produce electrical current
Solar cells convert sunlight into electricity by exciting electrons in the material, usually silicon. As the electrons move, they create an electric current, which is then captured and used as power.

Electrical energy is converted
Solar cells generate electricity in the form of direct current (DC) by exciting electrons with sunlight. However, most appliances use alternating current (AC), so the DC needs to be converted. This conversion is done by an inverter, which changes DC into AC. The AC electricity is then used to power appliances and devices in homes and businesses. In simple terms, the inverter makes solar power usable for everyday needs.

Converted electricity powers your home
Once the inverter converts solar power to AC, it flows through your home's electrical system to power lights, appliances, and devices. Excess electricity can be sent back to the grid, with some energy companies offering compensation through net metering. This reduces reliance on traditional power sources.

Net meter measures usage
A net meter is a special kind of electricity meter used with solar power systems. It measures the amount of electricity your home uses from the grid (the regular electricity supply) and the amount of extra electricity your solar panels send back to the grid.
how it works
- Electricity You Use: When your solar panels aren’t producing enough power for your needs (like at night or on cloudy days), the net meter records the electricity you pull from the grid.
- Extra Electricity Sent Back: When your solar panels produce more electricity than your home needs, the extra electricity is sent back to the grid. The net meter tracks how much power you send back.
At the end of the month, the meter shows the difference between the electricity you used from the grid and the extra power you sent back. If you used more electricity than your panels produced, you pay for the difference. If you sent more electricity back to the grid than you used, you may get credit from your energy provider.
In simple terms, a net meter helps keep track of both the electricity you use and the extra power your solar system gives back, making sure you’re only charged for the energy you truly consume.
